Lucy originally came to us as an owner surrender early in 2025. She was too much for the older couple and their senior beagle that took her in from their son when new baby was born. Lucy is a strong girl but we found her a strong owner. Lucy was adopted by a repeat adopter who build a new home specifically for his new Boxer. He came a visited her until he could move her in. Life was good until it wasn't. Both he and Lucy's life reached medical crossroads.
He notice Lucy drinking more water. A vet visit and extensive testing resulted in Lucy being diagnosed with renal dysplasia. This is a genetic condition that shows up in young dogs where kidneys do not develop properly. There is no cure, but there is management that provides quality of life for hopefully years. It's all about the best nutrition to not have kidney overworked. Lucy is eating special fresh Just Food for Dogs renal support which she loves and is doing well on. Lucy has a medical condition which is manageable but her owner may not be so lucky.
He developed multiple serious and life threatening organ failures and conditions that rendered him unable to care for Lucy. This double medical surprise hit hard. He wants what is best for her to have any kind of future.
Lucy is back at BRLA after over a year of being home and she continues to thrive on the proper food and exercise. She is strong and active and taking lots of pack walks with other BRLA Boxers. She may be best as the only dog in the home, she knows all her commands and is very strong. BRLA will continue to provide her JFFD to keep her going strong.
With renal dysplasia there is no timeline, she could live a happy life for years to come, with proper care, or could take a turn sooner. Lucy will definitely have a longer life in a home rather than a kennel environment.
BRLA will fully support her adopter or foster with food and medical follow ups to provide the best life for everyone!
**NOTE** From experience and for safety: We do not place a female into a home with another already in residence**
THE BEST HOME FOR LUCY SHOULD
Lucy's original profile info;
Lucy is about 1-1/2 years old and came to us as an owner surrender. Nice retired couple helped their son by taking Lucy in when she was too rambunctious for his young family. She joined their home with a senior beagle in residence. After some time they realized that Lucy, being a young active Boxer, needed more than they felt they could provide. They reached out for us to find her an active home with boxer experience to allow her to fully engage in life and live her life to the fullest. She has puppy energy with a side of chill. She has basic commands down pat and is very treat driven to learn more. She walks well on leash and is very playful. At home she was a bit too playful for the grandkids who often were knocked down unintentionally. She can get sassy which is why her humans need to be good leaders. Lucy just loves life in a big way.
She is pretty calm at BRLA, not demonstrating any anxiety or fears. She lived with another dog without conflict and is making new friends at BRLA. She does require a proper introduction as can be a bit defensive when meeting new dogs, but is gaining confidence with every social encounter at BRLA. She would also be fine as the only dog with lots of human engagement. She will need owners that are good leaders with training experience that understand good routines create great dogs! And to continue building her confidence. She was mostly outside at previous home and slept in a crate in the garage. She is a very happy girl and is ready to find the right home to enjoy a fantastic life.
